Eve out of Her Ruins by Ananda Devi
4.0

Eve Out Of Her Ruins is not a book for the faint-hearted and I mean this in an extremely positive way.
The story follows the lives of four teenagers growing up in the impoverished Port Louis district of Mauritius and this is such a contrast to the side of the country most people know about.

There is BRUTALITY throughout Eve Out of Her Ruins, yet I keep feeling like the best words to describe it remains beautiful and sensual. Because somehow, Ananda Devi (and translator Jeffrey Zuckerman) manage to make the struggles our four main characters go through utterly clear. The writing is powerful, it isn't burdened by unnecessary descriptions or "plottiness". This is a tight story that somehow still manages to breathe, and I love that.

A small part of me wanted more. Like, maybe if there was just a tiny bit more space for emotional fallout for all its characters. In retrospect, this point feels minor compared to the at-times shattering moments for other characters. Eve Out of Her Ruins ultimately manages to do so much in so few pages, with beautiful writing and a strong impression/experience by the end.
