"Just Kids" is so poetic, evocative, and well-written. It's a truly beautiful story of fate, friendship, survival, art, and ambition. As a memoir, it treads the tightrope of lighthearted, reflective, and emotional in a wonderful way. The picture Patti Smith creates of New York and all the people she meets there is visceral. It's so atmospheric and even a little gritty in parts, but still maintains a constant feeling of warmth and whimsy throughout. "Just Kids" is a book clearly written with a lot of thought, consideration, and so much unconditional love and affection.

While the story (and its ending) is tinged with sadness, Patti writes with a sense of optimism that defines this memoir as a stunning celebration of life, art, and human connection in all its forms. The relationship between Patti and Robert was beautiful in all of its complexity and was the heart and soul of this book.

In addition, this is also a tale of growing up. Patti and Robert's story perfectly encapsulates the pain, confusion, and joy of trying to find your place in the world—something intrinsically human that we all strive for.
