The Summer of Owen Todd
by Tony Abbott
Trigger warning!
I thought this was a very well written story about a very difficult topic. I liked that it was written from the POV of the friend who was sworn to secrecy instead of the person who was dealing with the issue. This gave a different perspective into the subject matter and showed how the people around the victim feel and deal with things.
I would have liked to have seen more of the "after" for the victim, but being from the POV of the friend, I understand why we didn't. I like to hope for the best and hope that he was able to move on from his tragic circumstances to have a productive and fulfilling life.
I think this book will be hard for some readers to handle and I definitely thing parental guidance would be advisable in this story. I would want to know that my child was reading it so that I could be there for discussion about such a distressing topic. Light does need to be shed on the subject though, and I think this book will do well to help kids know that it is the right thing to tell, no matter what you've promised. And perhaps help victims see that they are not at fault and should seek help.
