The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton
4.5

I really enjoyed The Andromeda Strain. I was listening to it on audio while I did various chores and played games, and ended up listening to the whole book in one sitting because I didn't want to turn it off.

It's a science fiction thriller which fully embraces both the science and the thrills, but is not heavy on action. Chrichton also doesn't spend a great deal of time on the characters so if you're a very character driven reader this book might not work for you, but for myself I was invested enough in the plot that it never mattered to me.

I've read and enjoyed several Chrichton novels before, and while this isn't my favourite one - (that's probably still Jurassic Park) it gripped me more quickly than any of the others. I enjoyed both the writing and the audiobook narration. I didn't actually realise until I finished the book that it was written in the 1960s, and it absolutely still holds up - admittedly there is an absence of significant female characters, but as mentioned I didn't read it for the characters anyway.

I believe there are two screen adaptations of The Andromeda Strain, a film and a miniseries, and I would love to see both in the future.
