The Spare Room by Helen Garner
4.0

I was surprised to find this is a work of fiction! The protagonist and author share a first name, so naturally I assumed this was a memoir. From my experience, it certainly rings incredibly true.

I felt so much compassion for Darling Hels and what she sacrifices to care for her friend. Brusque and forthright but with a heart of gold, Helen displays nothing but kindness and patience with her friend. Nicola on the other hand... oh my. I know you're not supposed to dislike people with cancer. But she is selfish, rude, spiteful and downright idiotic. She reminds me so much of my mother and what it was like to care for her through her cancer - the difference being that my mum wasn't adverse to Western medicine (aka SCIENCE). You'd never have caught her injecting Vit C into her veins and telling everyone that it basically scoops the cancer out.

That said, there is a certain level of desperation that comes with a terminal diagnosis. People will try anything. Shame on all those who scam dying people out of their money when they are desperate.
