The Last One at the Wedding by Jason Rekulak
4.0

Thank you so much to the author for providing my employer (a library) an advance copy!

I have been fortunate to have met Jason several times and he is such a lovely man! And his book The Impossible Fortress was one that I picked up years ago when I was trying to start reading again as an adult so that book will hold a special place in my heart.

But let's get to his latest book coming out on October 8th, 2024. I feel like I would call this book more of a suspense book than a mystery or thriller. You kind of know where this book is going as you are reading but yet I still couldn't stop. I felt the pacing of the book flowed really quickly. Our MMC Frank Szatowski is just an average man who is a long time employee of our US Postal Service who gets a call out of the blue from his estranged daughter Maggie inviting him to her upcoming wedding. And from the start, Maggie doesn't come off as the most authentic character.

One of my favorite tropes in this genre is when it takes place in one location so that scored points for me. Even though it was in one location, there were different ways Rekulak incorporated the grounds throughout the book. I really loved how Rekulak weaved a whole bunch of characters into this story that didn't make it feel like it was too many. There were a lot of questionable characters and you may even get enraged.

I will say there weren't really any big twists or major wow moments but there was one moment where I went "oh OH". Which I felt like that twist element was the only missing piece that would have really changed my rating on the book. Overall I still really enjoyed & it kept me engaged. And if you love rich people behaving badly, then you will want to check this out!
