The Book of Dragons by Jonathan Strahan
3.0

The Book of Dragons is an anthology featuring stories from popular fantasy authors including Daniel Abraham, R. F. Kuang, Kelly Barnhill, Kate Elliott, Garth Nix, Seanan McGuire, Scott Lynch, Peter S. Beagle, Ann Leckie and many more.  It's a beautiful book, with a gorgeous cover and occasional illustrations inside. I also like that it features poetry as well as prose.

Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this book as much as I wanted to. Every anthology tends to have a mix of stories that work for me and ones that don't, especially when there are multiple authors; however,  here the proportion of stories I liked was far too low. In addition, a handful of the authors seem to have interpreted the brief (dragons) very loosely indeed and barely featured the word let alone the creatures; they were in the minority but it still felt like a let-down.

Ultimately I don't think it's a bad book - anyone reading it is likely to find some stories they enjoy - but there are several other dragon-themed anthologies available and I have to hope that at least one of them is a better option.
