Haben: The Deafblind Woman Who Conquered Harvard Law
by Haben Girma
Haben's book about her life is broken up into chronological sections, which she writes as present-tense stories so we the readers experience it as she did. I really enjoyed her writing style and learning about how she navigates the world as a Deafblind Woman. She is a disability/accessibility advocate and I know a lot of people would call her story "inspirational" but that language is ableist and patronizing. That said, she is super impressive and I would say that of anyone asked to speak at the White House in her 20s. More stories like this, of people with disabilities living their lives and accomplishing great things, need to be out there so we can continue to normalize it and society can start to expect great things from every person regardless of ability.
