The Fever King by Victoria Lee

The villian(s) really worked for me. Chills.

The post reality setting did not work for me at all. I would rather you write a second world fantasy if you're going to do that much original worldbuilding. If you're going to drum up all the apacalypse in the real world feelings that will make the book anxiety inducing for me to read, I need the reality of it to be the point not just part of the premise. Giving cheeto caligulas slogans to a secondary world character would be a little heavy handed as a metaphor but fine. Giving them to a character in this world without acknowledging that based on the premise of your own fiction these were already used in a different context that your characters (who knew about the holocaust) might have known about strikes me as evoking the feelings and not doing anything with them.
