The War I Finally Won
by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
The sequel to one of my favorite books I read last year-- this book exceeded all expectations! It follows the life of Ada, a girl who, thanks to surgery and her guardian, finally receives treatment for her clubfoot and the ability to walk without limitations. This book specifically deals with Ada determining her place and responsibilities after her adoption and finding family in the most unlikely of places.
Set in World War II, it doesn't shy away from the pain that follows war on both sides and the battle that occurred on the home front in England. This book features a strong-willed main character who struggles to accept the love and help from her new family, and is wonderful for kids (of all ages) who identify with difficulty expressing emotions, those who enjoy historical books, or even just horse-lovers.
I really can't tell you all how much I love this series. It's a great, purposeful book for middle-school age kids that many would enjoy!
