I loved the (incredibly faithful) movie adaptation for The Old Guard so it makes sense that the og comic would be a hit. I probably prefer the film but this was a fun read.

I really liked Leandro Fernández's inky, almost noir-esque art style throughout. Also as a huge fan of colorists like Matt Hollingsworth the limited (near monochromatic) coloring style for panels by Daniella Miwa was fantastic and really added to the harsh tone of the comic.

I will say the action scenes didn't really hit for me it was a lot of machine gun flashbangs that weren't really exciting for me to engage with. But this was evened out by incredibly cool splash pages with wicked character posing throughout. I also love the character design here. I primarily read superhero comics which often default to characters being genetically attractive so I love it when artists go for the most interesting character design rather than the most pretty.

The story, again, was great. Rucka definitely punched it up for the screenplay but its exploration of the weight of immortality was well done here too. I was happy to see a tonne of my fave moments (like Joey's speech in the van) were comic originals. And I also appreciated the expanded character backstory for Booker and getting flashes of Andy's loves and losses.

Overall the Old Guard is really good. I can't wait to see how the story progresses in volume 2.
