This is a story I’m very familiar with, as it has been adapted into a very successful play that I’ve seen a few times. Despite this, I still had a fantastic time reading this spooky novella.

The thing that struck me most about this book was the atmosphere. Hill conjure and a creepy and tense sensation around the village and Alice Drablow’s empty, isolated house. I very rarely get chills from reading, but I found myself burying myself deeper and deeper into the blankets as I read this short ghost story. She’s an absolute master of creating tension and fear in the narrative! I’d highly recommend this book for some quick reading on a rainy winter’s night.
