The Voting Booth by Brandy Colbert
5.0

The Voting Booth covers a LOT of topics, so consider these trigger warnings as well: death of a sibling, grief, voter suppression, gun violence, police interactions (though not fatal).

This book could’ve easily come across as preachy/repetitive as its entire premise is on such a singular topic (pro-voting/every vote counts), but the author NAILS the tone, and the YA setting helps as well, since it’s couched in the excitement of a first vote. Also it’s on the shorter side and there are other side storylines that allow the reader to leave then return then leave again from the protagonist’s various impassioned speeches about the importance of voting to affect change.

I haven’t read a book like this before, where it is so singularly clear the entire takeaway is to have its audience do one specific action and I dig it, honestly. Especially with the focus on Black teens!

I’m always reluctant to read books that take place over one day, which is actually unfounded because the 3 I’ve read that I can think of off the top of my head (including this one) used that story device really well and didn’t feel rushed or weird with the many flashbacks.

Overall a good read! I teared up, I smiled, I was inspired to vote! I hope this helps further the cause.
