This book is a great story that got muddled somewhere along the way. Thea's characterization was uneven - was she unsocialized, or was she able to immediately sort out the social hierarchy at Yonahlossee? She was perpetually acting counter to how she logically would have acted, given her life experience. The other girls and their relationships rang true, and there was so much beautiful description of the camp, horses, and Thea's Florida home. However, smaller details - like the "cool brick" Thea encountered more than once in Florida...in the summer - pulled me away from the story. Just one of those books I wanted to love but it didn't quite work for me.
