dapperreads 's review for:

The Broken Girls by Simone St. James
4.25

This is a reread for me with an original rating of 5⭐️. I read this before I wrote a review for every book so I can’t say I have any idea why I rated it that way. I’m a very harsh reviewer these days, but I do believe I’ll still really like this - we’ll see!

Upon completion of the reread, I’m sad to say it didn’t hold up for me but I think I know why - I knew what happened, when it happened and how it happened already - so the suspense just wasn’t there. I wasn’t sure I remembered much about this book until I was about 4 chapters in and then it all rushed back to me. It was still good, but certainly not five stars - while I can’t speak to why I rated it that way in the past, I will say that when the plot lines collide shit gets real, and it does it fast and that part (even knowing what was happening before it happened) was still really good.

I listened to the audiobook this time (my hardcover the first time) and the narrator and sound effects really brought this book to life. Every step was taken to ensure that a creepy atmosphere was present and the dual timelines brought the original story to life while keeping the tension with the current times as the story unravels.

So:
Original rating: 5⭐️
Reread: 3.5⭐️
New Rating: 4.25⭐️

Basically, in my opinion, this is an excellent read but the reread ability just isn’t there. Even with every step taken, the suspense just wasn’t there and I feel like that’s what I enjoyed so much the first time. Still recommend 100%.
