Murder On The Christmas Express by Alexandra Benedict
4.0

The title of this book is rather misleading. It makes it sound like a cosy, feelgood Christmassy mystery, and while the book is set at Christmastime, I would never describe it as cosy. It's actually quite emotional. I'll put the trigger warnings at the end of the review in case anybody doesn't want to be spoiled.

It's a gripping book, I was interested by halfway through the prologue and the intrigue was high throughout, I read it quickly because I didn't want to put it down. The Agatha Christie influence is clear (Murder on the Orient Express is namedropped at least twice) but there's a very modern setting and feel, with a fair bit of reflection on contemporary issues. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the characters were engaging.

I have mixed thoughts on the ending. I can't say much without spoiling the entire plot, but the way the mystery is tied up was done well and made sense - I'm just not sure if I personally like it. It's the kind of book where a book club could spend a fair bit of time discussing and debating the ending.

Overall a gripping, atmospheric read which is well worth a read - just don't go into it expecting cosiness.
