We Have Always Lived in the Castle
by Shirley Jackson
Having started this book before and ending up putting it back down quickly, I wasn't expecting to low key love this book. It's creepy and unsettling. Think classic haunted house horror energy. This is a story about fear and hurt. A story which shows you the other side to the 'creepy rundown house on the corner where a witch lives' from your childhood.
I felt so deeply for the characters and wish they could have had better. Merricat is fabulous and the ending is bizarre. Definitely a book I'll come back to again and again.
