Waiting for Godot: A Tragicomedy in Two Acts
by Samuel Beckett
Used as my 20th Century classic for the Back to the Classics Challenge. I had meant to read this, and thus chip away at one small corner of what sometimes feels like the infinitely huge marble block of my ignorance (which only grows larger the more I read and learn), for years before I finally got to it. I was somewhat intimidated by it, having heard from many sources that it made no sense. But when I sat down with it, I became completely wrapped up in the flow of Vladimir and Estragon's conversation and in their interminable plight. I read it in two sittings, copied whole sections into my notebook, and had many pessimistic thoughts about how all of us are stuck waiting for our own personal Godot who will never arrive to grant us the salvation we crave. I need to buy a copy so that I can return to it and develop my thinking about it in greater detail. But I can say, definitively, that I loved this play. Read it, surrender yourself to the absurdity, and enjoy.
