The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel
4.5
emotional reflective medium-paced

I LOVED this one, possibly even more than Station Eleven (apparently I rated that one a 5 and this one a 4.5 but I used to be a lot more generous with my ratings), but it’s one of those ones where I can’t put my finger on WHY I loved it - I just did 😭 It has intertwining storylines, different character perspectives, a hint of mystery, a giant Ponzi scheme… all the good stuff! It also made me desperately want to go and work at sea for 6 months at a time - don’t you think that’s when you know a writer has real power? It reminded me of Fresh Water for Flowers when I was looking up cemetery custodian jobs 😂 Though I will say that the narrator, although she had a lovely voice, great delivery, needs a little work on her accents. I was convinced one character was meant to be Irish but even that accent was dodgy, but then it was later revealed he was from Newcastle, where I’m from… Oh boy 😅 BUT overall, a must-read if you like a quieter novel that offers exquisite character studies.
