Fallen
by Karin Slaughter
This is likely my favorite of the series so far. I couldn't put it down nor could I believe how quickly everything spiraled out of control as Will and his pals track down leads that put them in enough danger to keep me perched on a razor’s edge, waiting to see if they’ll even all survive the investigation.
It begins with Faith Mitchell heading to her mother's house to pick up her daughter, and as soon as she pulls up it's obvious that there is something very wrong. First, she sees a bloody handprint on the side door, then she tries to get into the shed where her mother stores her gun and the key is missing but her daughter is safe, tucked into her carrier and partially hidden from view. Faith calls in the incident to dispatch and defies the orders to wait outside, desperate to save her mother if she can.
In minutes she discovers a dead intruder and shoots dead two more herself, all before backup bangs through the front door. Her mother, retired captain of the Atlanta Police Department, is gone and Faith is APD's prime suspect. Will Trent and their GBI supervisor, Amanda Wagner, have to hold back, pretending they're not going to check the work of the PD in order to look after Faith and get to the truth. That truth may only be found by delving into the former captain's past and who she may have gotten involved with during and after her time on the force. And Amanda knows a lot more than she's willing to admit.
