thenerdybookwitch 's review for:
Wintersong
by S. Jae-Jones
Before I review this: I hated the idea of reading this book years ago. I was scared that the Labyrinth inspired book would be closer to plagiarism than a love letter. Now that I have finished the book, me three years ago was dead wrong. It is Germanic folklore, it's as similar as it is different. Let's jump into S. Jae-Jones' Wintersong:
.
.
The writing is amazing! It is very easy to mess up a first person perspective, but in Wintersong it is lyrical, descriptive and deep. Just like music. The pacing is as great as it can be with the book's incredible writing. The story itself is also interesting and it took me places. The characters are all written extremely well, Elisabeth and the Goblin King have amazing character development. I cared about all the characters except for some of the side characters, but they were not the main focus so I understand why. Elisabeth is an amazing protagonist and I think that if it had been her sister the story wouldn't have flowed so well.
.
.
The only problem I had was the pacing in small ways. Yes I enjoyed the pacing, but there were times that it felt painfully slow. However, S. Jae-Jones used it to her advantage very well. If you are in the mood for a slow burn, folklore romance fantasy about a Goblin King in the Underground, definitely give this a try! If you are seeking a more intense and fast paced story, don't start with this. It's not for you now but it might be later. I really loved this book and I can't wait to read the sequel.
