The Attic Child by Lola Jaye
5.0

While I was listening to this audiobook, I wasn't sure it was going to be a 5* rating for me, but as things came together, it did have a 5* feel. Told in two timelines ... the young boy taken from the Congo and brought to England starts in 1903 and his story expands over years. Listening to the audio, I wasn't sure how the girl's name was spelled (it was mentioned phonetically) "Lowra" and that's how it was pronounced l-ow (as in ouch)-ra. Her story takes place in 1993, although it feels as though much of it is in her past, as so much of her story is flashbacks to her "attic" time. Hers had the slightest "The Little Princess" feel ...

Both stories were tragic, and at times hard to listen to. The historical aspect was interesting. I think I really got involved when the two stories intertwined in the final quarter of the book. The author's note at the end was interesting as well. This is one I'd like to have the kindle copy of to read over after listening.

The two narrators were great.
I wish the chapters in the TOC were labeled Dikembe (and the year) and Lowra. It was announced at the beginning of each chapter in the audio - I just would like that printed in the TOC too, making it easier to go back and check a chapter (looking specifically for Dikembe or Lowra's parts).
