Truly Devious
by Maureen Johnson
A book loved by many and since I love a good young adult thriller, I decided to pick it up! Unfortunately for me, it didn't live up to the hype, even though I really wanted it too!
The start was very strong, which surprised me and really made me keep reading, because often enough, thrillers have a slow start, to build up suspense!
This one started out strong and I was hoping it would continue like that, but unfortunately as we were nearing the middle and then the end, it started deflating. There was no climax by the end of the book and when I realized that the mystery wouldn't be solved in this book, but it would (most likely) be solved in the third book, I felt a little disappointed.
The characters were interesting, some of them more than others, and I found myself more drawn to the flashbacks than the present. The chapters that took place in 1936 were so intriguing and the atmosphere in these ones, was so much more palpable than the chapters taking place in the present.
Stevie's deducting skill were impressive, I liked her as a character, I just would have liked a more in depth exploration of her. What more, I felt like the romance was a bit abrupt, I wasn't expecting it to happen and I'm not sure what purpose it serves. Maybe we'll see in the sequel!
Overall, it's an interesting book, but I would have liked it to be a bit more thrilling and suspenseful! I'll probably continue with the series, just not right now.
