A beautifully written book, protagonist Janie suffers through all her marriages, 1st to Logan Killings, 2nd to Joe Starks but for the 3rd one to Tea cake, whom she loves dearly. He gets rabies after being bitten by a mad dog trying to save Janie from it. He becomes mad and tries to kill Janie but Janie shoots him to protect herself. She is a strong woman. Having fled from Logan, she lives with Joe for 20 years. They portray Joe as a typical male who makes Janie obey him, makes her wear a scarf to hide her beautiful hair and doesn't like if she ever displays any of her talents.
The first marriage to Logan was due to her Nanny who was worried about janie and caught her kissing a boy. Altough logan is way older than her and is not very handsome as compared to Janie, Nanny marries her off to him as he owns a 60 acre land. All her dreams of love are shattered once she marries him.
