The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James
5.0

Hooooooooly Bible in a skeezy motel's bedside table! WOW! The Sun Down Motel did not hold back and I absolutely loved it. This is the first book I have read from Simone St. James and I am already a fan. I will obviously be getting more of her stuff!

This book is a great blend of horror AND thriller. I say that based on the format and style of the book. The book is written in two time periods: 1982 and 2017. In 1982, we get to know Viv as she becomes a night shift front desk clerk at a roadside motel. Not to spoil anything at all: weird shiz hits the fan and she ends up missing and presumed dead. In 2017, her niece, Carly, is in that same town and winds up working that exact same job on the hunt for answers about what happened. Weird stuff continues to happen. These two time periods start connecting over a series of murders that took place before Viv even showed up. Are these murders connected? Does it have anything to do with Viv's fate? Is Carly in danger? OH. And the hotel is freakin' haunted. OOPSY!

I almost read this cover to cover as I couldn't pull myself away. I get that way with alternating time periods and POVs, though. But I think that is also a great benefit of an author using that style - WHEN IT WORKS. And Simone St. James nailed it with this one.

The last couple of chapters gave me chills the whole time. Some ominous phone calls, rainy weather, flickering lights, that feeling of isolation and loneliness in the middle of the night. I used to work night shift in the hospital when I was in college... and I can confirm it is just a totally different environment than that exact same job during the day. There are way more people, more lights on, a different group of people working, etc. It is wild just how different the exact same job can be in the night compared to the day. And when I finished that final page, phew, I turned that cover around to look at that abandoned, eerie motel and got chills one final time. I exhaled, looked over at my cat trying to sleep, and said, "Well, hot f*ckin' damn." 5 STARS!!!
