Watchmen
by Alan Moore
I read this years back in High School. Then I saw the movie (which I enjoyed) and decided to try this again 10+ years later. Did it hold up? Mostly yes. I feel about the same as I did then.
What I liked: Loved the idea of this. A more realistic world filled with Superheroes. That's always been something I enjoyed of this series and think it let way in series like Kickass and such. I also liked how the story was told between different points of views. Gives insight into everyone's lives before and after. Giving a complete story. I also liked the ending and the "twist" was well thought out (though I actually enjoyed the movie version of the ending more. Felt more heartfelt and painful). Overall I enjoyed most of the dialog and thought process of this story and believe it still holds up.
What I didn't like: Alan Moore is a bit of a...how can I say this nicely? A cunt? Yeah that sums it up. He is a grumpy person and sometimes he thinks too highly of himself, and that condencing nature effects some of his work in here. Some of it sounds like he's crawled TOO far up his ass. It's annoying. I also felt the pacing is disjointed in here and some chapters filled with boring filler that could have been cut shorter.
I still believe Watchmen is very important. I think it has ideas that a lot of stories nowdays use and it changed things. I do think it's a bit too long and stretched out overall but very much worth your time. A 3.5-4/5.
