"We can walk down the road with him. We can keep him company."

A beautifully written novella. The story focuses on a Grandfather who has dementia, but still remembers parts of his life. He remembers his wife and how fiercely he loved her. He remembers where he taught his son to ride his bike. He remembers that his grandson, Noah, loves numbers like he does. But what he also remembers is how he is slowly forgetting. The square is getting smaller and the way home gets longer and longer.

This story, though quick, doesn't short you. You feel the feels-- all of them. And since dementia is something many of us are facing with our own parents or grandparents this hits close to home. Backman, as always, knows how to deliver lines that stay with you even after you finish reading.
