Emily Wilde's Compendium of Lost Tales
by Heather Fawcett
I have whiplash, so much just happened.
A light rain, mixed with sleet, is falling beyond the window, but I have not drawn the curtains, for my view of the lantern-lit campus is charming in the winter night’s gloom.
The descriptions of scenery within this book are beautifullll.
He held me until I was still, gently combing through my hair, and I leaned my forehead against the curve of his neck. I could smell the wildflowers in his hair.
Wendell and Emily are as always the most amazing couple to ever exist. I loveeee clear communication. I also love that Wendell is basically just obsessed with Emily and spends his days doing everything he can to make her happy.
“You do not wish to know how I came by this information?”
“Yes, but only because you clearly wish to tell me,” he said, smiling.
Their back and forth is so cute and playful as always but I feel like in this book you get to see their dynamic perfectly. She is an independent free spirit who needs her own time to study and work things out. He ultimately is a needy bitch who is obsessed with her lmao but understands her perfectly and gives her the space she needs even if he does resort to playful guilt tripping occasionally. (Drama queen)
"Anyway, Em, I am sure you are happily ensconced in your native habitat, that dreary monument to mortal rumination that is the library, no doubt thinking of me hardly at all."
He is so real for this^
"And so, Em, when I say that I am wretchedly ill at ease without your company, that I feel as if I am missing a limb, that I cannot be content even amidst the wonder of my realm, you will understand the depth of my feelings."
My guy is a SIMP
Now...POE. ;_; Every time he appears in this series I want to cry because he is the sweetest. He was in this book for all of 3 pages and it was enough to leave an impression. Best boy.
"Mother says I should not wish for things that may never come to pass, but be content with what I have today. She can spear a seal with one thumb, which would be useful, wouldn’t it?”
The Winter king is SO funny. Yes Wendell is the love of my life and no fae king can compare and i am loyal to him blah blah. But this is comedy gold.
“She was a great beauty, with a singing voice that could charm the aurora. When an illness took her, it drove him mad, and he swore he would never marry another but her own flesh and blood.”
“Ah,” the king said. “She had no other siblings?”
I gritted my teeth “No”.
Ultimately I ended up enjoying this way more than I thought I would at first. I found this to have the slowest start out of all three and 150 pages in I was starting to worry that we weren't getting anywhere but actually, once it picked up there was so much going on. I loved the return of old characters and thought the ending rounded everything off perfectly.
I am also, as always, in love with Wendell ♡
