The Map by William Ritter
4.0

The Map takes place between [b:Jackaby|20312462|Jackaby (Jackaby, #1)|William Ritter|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1410170969l/20312462._SX50_.jpg|28147221] and [b:Beastly Bones|24001095|Beastly Bones (Jackaby, #2)|William Ritter|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1425592816l/24001095._SY75_.jpg|43601150], on Abigail’s birthday while Jackaby takes her on an illustrious journey through an otherworldly market and a centuries-old treasure hunt, as a gift. Albeit reluctant at first (she doesn’t want her birthday to be a big deal), Abigail is swept away by the adventure and eventually ends up leading the chase.

This story was so fun to read, I found myself smiling and laughing at the pair as they escaped crumbling castles, and dash past giant rabbits. It was very interesting to see another side of Jackaby, since it’s obvious here that he genuinely cares about Abigail, which is less obvious in the books, and he values her insight immensely (even if he rarely admits it). Another interesting aspect to this story was its pace: in a way, I’d say the pace mirrors Abigail’s disposition to the whole thing: it starts out slow, with a hint of excitement, and slowly builds from there until I felt like I was running right along side Jackaby and Abigail on the search for their treasure.

Basically I was very satisfied with his book, recommend it to anyone who has a soft spot for historical fiction and fantasy, and, of course, all the Jackaby fans out there.
