This was a super powerful story about cultural and religious identity, religious persecution, ethnic cleansing and so much more. There are a lot of heavy topics. Based on Jewish and Hungarian mythology, it was full of fables and myths, and though the story was very much fantastical, it also felt very close to real historical events. Evike was a strong and nuanced protagonist but I do wish some of the other characters had been more developed. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone with an interest in religion or mythology. As well as anyone who just enjoys stand alone fantasy novels.
