Mother Panic, Vol. 1: Work in Progress
by Jody Houser
Very disappointing. The character has an interesting premise. A child forced into a “boarding school” is experimented and upon release, sets out on a quest of revenge against those who hurt her and her mother. There’s a lot of similarities between Violet Paige and Black Widow, the difference is one of those characters is more complex and is far more likable than the other. Violet’s quest is something I want to see more of, the character herself is completely unlikable, and the side characters like her mother and the people Violet rescues aren’t given enough time to be interesting either.
The costume is DOPE but the art style unfortunately changes halfway through the book. We start with a grungy, sketchy style that’s perfect for this book, then jump to a simple, more exaggerated look that isn’t bad, but feels a bit dated and just doesn’t mesh with the tone of the story. Gonna read the next volume since this series only lasts 12 issues, but not expecting much.
