Spill Zone by Scott Westerfeld
4.0

A mysterious incident combined with a nuclear accident created a terrifying area called the Spill. The people caught in the midst of the accident remain trapped there, shadows of their former selves, condemned to linger in a kind of limbo existence while mutated creatures roam the former city streets. Addison is one of the few who illegally ventures into the Spill Zone to capture haunting images of the creatures and phenomenon there. By selling her illegal art, she struggles to make ends meet and to take care of her little sister who was one of the few people who escaped that day.

Deeply creepy in the very best way. Not my favorite art style, but the kind of rough and not pretty style does match with the content. I am intrigued and if there's another one I'll definitely read it.
