5⭐️❤️
“Joy Luck was an idea my mother remembered from the days of her first marriage in Kweilin, before the Japanese came. That’s why I think of Joy Luck as her Kweilin story.”
I loved this book. I don’t often read stories that are character driven plots because not that many authors are capable of captivating me, I even have a very small selection of movies with limited scenery because the characters are so good you don’t need that many props (Stalag 17 being my favorite).
Amy Tan did a great job with building these characters. I wanted to know more about them. I loved the Chinese culture description and each of the mothers immigration experience to America. I mostly loved the description of the relationships between the mothers and their daughter. I am pretty close with my mom and family and love hearing about their past. This book even reminded me of when I traveled with my grandfather to see where his family lived in North Plat, Nebraska before moving to Southern California. It was nice seeing where he once lived in as a child and seeing the very old cemetery where his grandparents and others were buried.
I’ve seen bits of the movie and now that I’ve read this I’m looking forward to seeing the full movie.
And with some books I often end up listening to music while reading. I’ll also end up making a soundtrack.
My Joy Luck Club Soundtrack:
* American Girl by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
* China Girl by David Bowie
* China by Tori Amos
* Who Are You by The Who
* Daughter by Pearl Jam
* Rain by Patty Griffin
* Ode to My Family by The Cranberries
* Hometown Glory by Adele
* Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper (featuring Sarah McLachlan)
* Smoke Signals by Phoebe Bridges (“You must have been looking for me/ Sending smoke signals”)
