Granted, I'm not big on short stories so there are few collections that I've made it through in recent years, however- short stories or not Arimah can write!! I was incredibly impressed at page 1 at how much control is exerted over her storytelling. I was even more pleasantly surprised by how even when a story has an open-ended conclusion, I still felt like there was enough of a conclusion/resolution to deem that story complete and successful.

Every time I turned a page and assumed I had Arimah's style pegged, she'd begin a new story and throw all rules out the window. It was fascinating! She made up a fable of the gods and made a miniature dystopian masterpiece interspersed between stories documenting "regular" hardships, both in Nigeria and America. It seemed like Arimah really embraced her upbringing and ran with what she knows, as is common advice for writers, and was able to make each story so accessible that it would have been hard not to enjoy myself.

I have a feeling she will be an Always-Buy for me from here on out. Can't wait until she puts out something else!
