dermkat 's review for:
House of Earth and Blood
by Sarah J. Maas
Okay, back last December I asked my IG followers for book recommendations for my first Jollabokaflod (but pandemic edition where I bought my own book) and so many people recommended two different Fantasy authors: Jennifer L. Armentrout and Sarah J. Maas. I decided that they wouldn't be my choice for that occasion but that I'd read one book by each author at some point this year. I did JLA's earlier and finally got to SJM's. I did not expect to enjoy this book but the story was so so good once I figured out the world and all its creatures/terms/etc. Bryce is a half human, half Fae woman living in Crescent City. Two years after her life was suddenly turned upside down, she is approached to consult on a crime investigation. Hunt is an angel (and well known/feared assassin) who is tasked with guarding and working with her. There is just too much to say about this book but I don't want to ruin anything so I'll just say: multiple unexpected twists and a last however many 100 pages that a friend refered to as making them feel like they'd run a marathon by the end of the book, which I concur with. It is apparently the first in a new series but it wrapped up well enough that as someone who doesn't generally read fantasy, I feel okay having just read this one. That all said, I did really enjoy this book and talking to people who had read it about all the twists. I also convinced my sister to read it and seeing her reactions to things was excellent!
