Shirley by Charlotte Brontë
4.5

This was a really interesting and informative read. I could see echoes of Jane Eyre, but the subject was different enough that it didn't feel repetitive at all. There were some extremely poignant passages. I also feel like I understand the Luddite movement way better than even if I just read some nonfiction about it. The ending was too abrupt for my taste - give us more time to see them be happy together! We get way more content about the after-marriage relationship in Jane Eyre, so that ending felt much more satisfying to me.
