dittesque 's review for:
Full Frontal Feminism
by Jessica Valenti
Found it an entertaining book, a good introduction to feminism, but too American on the whole. Although much Valenti writes about are universal problems, she also uses a lot of examples that are just not applicable here. Especially the whole 'purity myth', on which Valenti wrote her second book, doesn't seem to be such an issue in Europe - or at least not in the Netherlands (although the "he's a stud, she's a slut" applies here as well). So an interesting book to get a general idea of the issues present day feminists are struggling with, but obviously written for an American public.
Oh, and the cursing was really annoying. Often it seemed forced into the text, as if the writer wanted to prove something. I think in America it is somehow a statement to say 'fuck' all the time, but it made me wonder how serious a writer Valenti really is. I know she is, but although she writes pleasantly, she seemed more like a rebel than a serious feminist publicist.
