Bubblegum by Adam Levin

The synopsis sounds like it would totally be my jam. Alternate universe, no internet, weird characters with these cute little flesh robots. The cover is so pink and sexy I just had to read it.

I actually hate DNFing. It gives me anxiety, But not as much as reading this book. . The writing was beyond me... totally ranty with awful names (LOTTA HOGG is our fat woman, BELT MAGNET is our main man, and then we have JONBOAT, Chad-Kyle, Jon Jon Jason and Blackie Buxsom) Could I have gotten over the names... absolutely. Did I enjoy the page long rants that were over the top and lot weird from every single character... no not at all. It was like it was all filler. And speaking of filler... the 37 pages I got through had almost every type of bigoted stereotypical slur and assumption in them. You can swipe to the right to see the ones that made me literally cringe while reading (Don’t worry I read reviews and apparently transphobic comments and more misogyny comes later in the book) When an unlikeable character has views and opinions that lend to the plot and characters acknowledge this bad behaviour I’m like okay... there’s none of that going on here. We use the r slur, the f slur, but don’t worry we don’t actually use the n slur in its entirety we just say “n-word” 🙄. We also used the term “automatically flailing” to refer to the flapping of limbs and I just couldn’t. Referring to people who attempted suicide as cowards. There was so much in 37 pages, I knew I’d never make it through 767 pages of this stuff. How can I DNF after such a short amount of time? The characters seem primarily white. Except for the store owner Pang. So far I’ve felt nothing but physically uncomfortable. “But Leah... maybe you’re just too sensitive.” I don’t even care. Even the thought of this book existing brings me pain in my soul. 😂 *sigh* This book won’t be for everyone, but if you enjoy it or think you might please don’t take my “review” to heart. I love a lot of books that other people go EWWWWW at.
