The Girl Who Broke the Sea
by A. Connors
This YA sci-fi thriller had some interesting ideas and I really liked the premise. I also liked the characters and was very quickly invested in the main character Lily. There was plenty of tension and I was intrigued enough that I basically read the book all in one sitting.
Unfortunately the execution of the ideas was not as strong as it needed to be. Major events happened so quickly that I didn't fully take on what was happening. Lily's so-called "emotional problems", which were a major theme from the beginning, were not competently addressed by the end - I appreciate the mental health representation but it needed to be handled better. Overall the book was just a little bit disappointing.
This is a debut, and for that reason I think I would choose to read more from the author in the hope that he improves over time, because the ideas really were good.
