I had mixed feelings about this book from the beginning. It was great to see Delta Squad again but it was confusing being quickly introduced to the Nulls by flashbacks of them as children as Skirata is making his way to a crime scene. Then the author introduces Omega squad as well and keeping the names and personalities separate was difficult at first. It was a good plot if at times confusing and went at a very slow pace.
It wasn’t until the drama with Etain and Darman began that I really started having a problem with this book. The fact that while they are in the middle of planning and executing an important mission Etain would suddenly be thinking of Darman and vice versa was annoying. They had not seen each other for months by the time they were reunited for the mission and when they parted in Hard Contact it was as friends. Then suddenly they seemed to be victims of insta-love. And her getting pregnant, don’t even get me started on that. It is one of my biggest annoyances at books when the characters get pregnant for not reason in a book. They are in the middle of a galaxy wide war and Etain, a jedi, decides its a good idea to have Darman’s baby? I was so angry I almost stopped reading entirely.
All in all, I will continue this series. But I am really hoping that this book was a victim of being a follow up to a fantastic first book and it got lost in the shadows. I adore the Clones and love how authors can make them their own unique individuals instead of cannon fodder that they were designed to be. Traviss is an excellent author; she writes the clones well and makes them all separate characters that you immediately like so I am hoping that this book was just an oops and the rest of the series is as good as the first book.
