Weird Black Girls: Stories by Elwin Cotman
3.75

Weird Black Girls is a collection of stories with overlapping themes of racial identity, sexual identity, generational abuse/trauma and a lot of biblical and mythical references. Cotman uses magical realism as a device to drive home his themes in a lot of the stories in this book.

I enjoyed MOST of the stories in this collection. My favorite being Things I Never Learned in Caitlin Clarke’s Intro to Acting Class. My least favorite being Tournament Arc and Weird Black Girls.

Cotman’s writing is breezy and brilliant full of incredibly important subject matters juxtaposed with extremely nerdy shit such as competitive wrestling, comic books and anime. He plays a lot with gender and sexuality in such a refreshing way.  I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to laugh while thinking deeply.

Weird Black Girls is out April 16th!
