Galatea is a retelling of the Pygmalion-myth. For the ones who don’t know it; Pygmalion is a master sculptor and one day he sculpts the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen and falls in love with her. He prays to Aphrodite and she brings the statue to life.
In this little book (it’s very tiny and only 20 pages) we read from Galatea’s perspective (the sculpture) a couple of years after their daughter, Paphos, is born. It gets quite a modern twist and it’s both beautiful and sad.
The writing style is, as we’re used to with Madeline Miller, very poetic and still easy to read.
I know it’s a short story, but I did miss some more depth now and then. I really wanted to know Galatea’s thoughts and personality.
But apart from it being too short (because I always want more Madeline Miller), I absolutely loved it and I really felt for Galatea.
