Landline
by Rainbow Rowell
So I picked up this book because I want to move past reading about high school students and their problems — it’s not something I can relate to anymore. Reading the blurb and seeing it was about “adults” was really appealing to me. It also helped that I’ve read books by the author before and very much enjoyed them.
I really enjoyed Landline! I’m a HUGE romantic so of course I was giddy reading all the flashbacks of Neal (although it’s unfortunate Neal is spelt that way) and Georgie’s meeting in college. I really like their dynamic as a couple. I’ve seen a few reviews that berate Georgie and Neal’s individual characters as being “unlikeable” or “annoying” and “selfish” but is it not more realistic to have characters with faults? For me, I liked both characters a lot, I thought they complimented each other really well. Yes, I thought Georgie was selfish, but that’s her character? We can’t have every character be a saint it’s just not realistic.
So, in saying that, I very much enjoyed this book and the characters and their development. My only issue was that the ending was just a little messy. I felt like nothing was really concluded. I think because of the plot of the book and the problems that Georgie and Neal had, it would’ve been beneficial to have a ‘clearer’ ending.
All in all though! I enjoyed this book a lot! Definitely recommend if you’re into realistic problems that occur in relationships but written in a lighter tone.
