It Devours!
by Jeffrey Cranor, Joseph Fink
The world of Night Vale is one of my favorite fictional worlds. I like the twisted and strange things in it, I like the diverse and complicated characters that live in it. I love how Fink and Cranor are able to show the complexities of human existence in this world that is so different (and yet so similar) to ours.
While I liked the first novel, I was a bit underwhelmed by it. Though that might have been because I didn't read it at the right moment, but I missed the world that comes alive in the podcast. This second novel seems to have hit the right spot with me. I loved Nils and Darryl's relationship as it felt very natural and real, and they both felt like human beings. I also could relate A LOT to Nils, as she's socially awkward and kinda bad at the whole dating thing.
The novels explores themes of religion and love, and how one can be a part of a community that does positive things. I loved the characters' development and their questioning, and how they grew together. And there's a fair amount of Carlos/Cecil, which is always fine with me. And by that, I mean that I fangirled a LOT every time they were on the page because they are LOVE and everything nice. They are really adorable all the time.
I felt that the action was also better developed in this novel than in the first one. The mystery was well developed and I was suffering in the action scenes. This being Night Vale, some terrible horror was to expected, and it delivered it beauifully (and horrifically).
As always, I will be listening to them because they are wonderful writers and creators, so I have high expectations for what comes up next. This universe is fascinating and I love reading more and more about it, because there's so much to explore in it.
P.S.: HOW ADORABLE WAS THE HELICOPTER PERSON???
