People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry is tied for 1st place as my all time favorite book. I own several copies of this book and adore the audiobook. Julia Whelan is a rockstar and gives a magnificent performance that brings Poppy and Alex to life!
I love the alternating timeline, I relish getting to read about their growing friendship while simultaneously trying to figure out what went wrong in the present day. This book is filled with so much love, honesty, and humor, the perfect read in my opinion. One of the things I applaud most about this book is that I KNOW these characters. They are so fleshed out and real that I can picture them perfectly. But don’t get me started on the banter! PWMOV has my all time favorite banter, I laugh just thinking about it. Nothing compares to Emily Henry’s elite quips and wisecracks.
Poppy and Alex are total opposites in all the best ways. Poppy’s clothing is loud, she likes sandals, and chain restaurants. Alex prefers Khakis and solid colors, thinks feet should be private and loathes the saxophone. They meet by chance at freshman orientation but don’t see each other again until they share a ride home at the end of Spring. By all accounts they shouldn’t be friends and yet they are. They start taking “summer trips” each year and remain strictly best friends. On their 10th trip, something happened and they haven’t seen each other for 2 years. Poppy bridges the gap and they plan another summer trip, will their friendship ever return to what it was, do they even want it to?
