How to Be a Good Creature: A Memoir in Thirteen Animals
by Sy Montgomery
3.5/5 stars.
I have never been an "animal person". I wasn't allowed to have traditional pets as a child. When I was younger, I had two fish, Bubbles and Mary. I had a wonderful relationship with each of these fish. Bubbles was protective and took a while to get comfortable around people. Mary was very flighty and excited about everything. She would often jump out of the fish tank and back into the water when someone she enjoyed was there. Reading this book helped me realize that I wasn't crazy for having a very close connection with my fish. When Bubbles died and then Mary shortly after him when I was eleven, I mourned for three weeks. I was devastated. I didn't just lose my fish at that time, I lost my friends. This book was very sweet.
