I am usually a big fan of WWII fiction so I went into this expecting to enjoy it, considering all the high praise for it. I found it sort of boring. The characters were okay, but in the end it was just a lot of meh. There wasn't much of a payout for any character, no good story arcs, half the people just disappeared or died off-screen, and what was there felt like a slog. I had to force myself to stay awake and finish the last 30 minutes or so because it felt totally pointless.
