“It’s funny how easily we can see love in movies or books but it’s so hard to see it in our own lives.”
The Girl with the Hazel Eyes tells the story of Susan Taylor while also telling the story of Barbadian Independence. Susan is an interesting woman who keeps the reader on their toes. Lia on the other hand was a bit bland for me, I enjoyed her more as the story went along but in the beginning, she wasn't doing it for me. I enjoyed the two timelines that were going on in the book and the mystery-thiller part of The Girl with the Hazel Eyes kept the storyline very exciting. The thing I enjoyed most about The Girl with the Hazel Eyes was the historical background of the main narrative and seeing more about the formation of a different Caribbean country's independence. The social commentary in the The Girl with the Hazel Eyes made me reflect on the society of my own country. While I did guess at the ending of the book, I thought it was a great ending that made it a beautiful story. It did seem a little rushed at the end but then some things do come suddenly (no spoilers sigh). Overall a very good read and addition to Caribbean literature.
