The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas
3.75
dark emotional tense fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I edited my ranking because, upon reflection and in spite of my quite enjoying Kara Thomas's writing and storytelling, I couldn't let go of one fact:
how the murder of a man who is coded as disabled by police is treated in the book. So much of Monica's anxiety in the beginning of her investigation is that her step-dad might have killed an unarmed man who was not guilty if the crime he was suspected of, but when it turns out this was indeed a murder, nothing happens and the situation is not addressed at all.
