I edited my ranking because, upon reflection and in spite of my quite enjoying Kara Thomas's writing and storytelling, I couldn't let go of one fact: how the murder of a man who is coded as disabled by police is treated in the book. So much of Monica's anxiety in the beginning of her investigation is that her step-dad might have killed an unarmed man who was not guilty if the crime he was suspected of, but when it turns out this was indeed a murder, nothing happens and the situation is not addressed at all.
