If you’re looking for a short but fierce reading, with an interesting and unique structure, queer characters and perspective, unapologetic writing … look no more, “Slum Virgin” got it all!
The chronology of the events could appear a little confusing at the beginning, but it becomes clearer and clearer as you dig into it. If you’ve read and liked “Insurrecto” by Gina Apostol, it’s a very similar (but more linear) structure. If in “Insurrecto” you have a interpreter correct and adjust the script of a filmmaker, here you have one of the two protagonist adding notes to the manuscript of the other, creating highly similar dynamics between the characters.
This alternance of point of view allow the reader to see the events from two vastly different perspectives, mainly highlighting class differences between the two characters.
Short but unforgettable, right to the point, it’s one of those stories that won’t leave you for a very long time.
